It’s a consistent investment in honing public safety techniques for the good of the public. Chelan County Sheriff’s deputies recently concluded the latest in in-service field training.
Sheriff's Sgt. Brent Frank says training of deputies covers everything from active shooter response in the community and at schools, road patrol tactics to firearm proficiency and more.
Deputies train at local schools, Chelan, Cascade and Cashmere School Districts, in preparation for an active firearms incident.
"The intentions are to familiarize the deputies with the facilities themselves, so it's not their first time navigating those facilities," said Frank. "We want them to have intimate knowledge of those buildings."
"We've done essentially what I would call a civilian readiness and response for the staff and faculty," the Sergeant added.
The Chelan County Sheriff's Office emphasizes training because law enforcement officers respond to a multitude of high-stress situations. To be well prepared for the next 9-1-1 call that beckons them, deputies are trained on not only the different tools available to them and how to use them. Road deputies often use PIT maneuvers, spike strips and grapplers, to apprehend fleeing motorists. There's also training in the use of non lethal weapons to gain the compliance of criminal suspects.
Sgt. Frank says training can't be overstated as deputies, "practice with a purpose, aiming for outcomes that are favorable for everyone."
