A 34-year old Manson was arrested Wednesday after a nearly two-hour search in the neighborhood around Morgen-Owings Elementary School on East Wooden Ave. in Chelan. The manhunt caused a temporary lockdown of students and staff at MOE, and Chelan Middle and High Schools.
Chelan County Sheriff's Sgt. Rob Huddleston said, "There was an attempted assault with a knife of a resident (at at home at 418 East Wooden Avenue)."
"Eventually he was located behind a residence, tucked in behind a couple of garbage cans," Sgt. Huddleston reported from the scene of the investigation. "He had the knife to his throat threatening self harm. A less-lethal bean bag round was deployed and he immediately dropped the knife and complied."
Jesus Gonzalez was taken into custody without incident. He was transported to Lake Chelan Community Hospital to be medically cleared and then to the Chelan County Regional Justice Center where he was booked on charges of Resisting Arrest and Assault 2nd degree.
The incident caused the Lake Chelan School District to take a 'secure perimeter emergency response' and placed schools on a modified lockdown.
"To make sure out of an abundance of caution," Lake Chelan School District Superintendent Brad Wilson said of the Sheriff's Office request to initiate a lockdown of students and staff. "We're still teaching and interacting and doing business as usual in the building, we're just not having any students go out of the building and we're not having anyone from out of the building come in."
Superintendent Wilson says parents and guardians were informed through the Bright-Arrow email and texting system.
