The Chelan-Douglas Health District (CDHD) has issued an urgent warning to residents about the presence of fentanyl in the local methamphetamine supply. Recent reports from healthcare partners indicate that methamphetamine is increasingly being contaminated with fentanyl, a highly potent opioid.
Fentanyl is up to 50 times stronger than heroin and can cause fatal overdoses, even in small amounts. Individuals using methamphetamine have no way of knowing if fentanyl has been mixed in their dosage. This can lead to a high risk of an accidental overdose.
Dr. Kristen Hosey, Health Administrator emphasized in a news release issued Monday, the urgent need for community awareness, stating, “At CDHD, we recognize that fentanyl overdoses are devastating families across our community. This warning is not about assigning blame but about saving lives. We urge everyone to look out for each other, talk openly about the risks, and know where to find help. By working together, we can prevent unnecessary deaths and protect our loved ones.”
The Health District reminds in their news release, If you suspect someone is overdosing, please call 9-1-1 immediately. An overdose can happen in minutes. Someone who is overdosing may show these symptoms:
Slow or difficulty breathing
Unresponsiveness or loss of consciousness
Blue lips or fingertips
Pinpoint pupils which may indicate a severe overdose
