State financial aid comes to Chelan County and Stehekin for flood damage repairs
Chelan County has been awarded $750,000 for reconstruction of a 400-foot stretch of Company Creek Road which was washed out by severe flooding of the Stehekin River last December.
The funds will go towards the Company Creek Road Resilience Project to reconstruct 400 feet of Company Creek Road, which was washed out by severe flooding of the Stehekin River during the December 2025 weather event. The flood waters were the highest since record keeping began more than 100 years ago and destroyed a levee that had protected downstream private and public facilities for many decades.
The newly reconstructed road will include resilience improvements to provide more floodplain access for the Stehekin River and incorporate wood habitat features to restore natural stream processes and prevent erosion.
"Failure to complete the project will likely result in significant loss of property and life as well as loss of public access to the western end of the Lake Chelan National Recreation Area," Mike Kaputa, Chelan County Natural Resource Department Director wrote in the funding application. Without funding for the project, "essential community personnel who live on Company Creek Road would be significantly challenged by flooding to do their jobs. School children would again miss school. Disabled and mobility-limited individuals will be at higher risk of injury and death, and emergency services will be limited in this area."
The Washington State Public Works Board has approved $7.4 million in loans and grants for local governments in Chelan and Spokane counties, and five other counties.
Of the total, $2 million is for three emergency projects in eastern Washington
Vince McGowan, chair of the 13-member public works panel said, “Infrastructure is the backbone of every community across Washington state.”
Funding for the flood-related damages comes from a special $10 million appropriation by the Legislature to the board earlier this year.
In Stehekin, the Washington State Department of Commerce reports that floodwaters reached their highest level since record-keeping began more than a century ago.
