Report: Chelan, Douglas County farming has a major impact on our daily lives

"Farming has a major impact on our daily lives, and it’s worth reflecting on where these agricultural products come from, says a new report from farmflavor.com. "The food, fiber and fuel we use every day can be traced back to a U.S. farmer."


In the report, New Chelan and Douglas County agriculture data has been released.


When considering overall production and economic stimulus, Chelan County is 567 among counties across the country. Douglas County ranked 616 on the list..


In Chelan County, the market value of agricultural products sold was $298 million. Crop sales totaled $289 million, and livestock and other animal product sales were $8.6 million.


An estimated 3% of Chelan County acreage is in agriculture use.. Its 712 farms employ 9.4% of the county’s workforce.


In Douglas County, the market value of agricultural products sold was $281 million. Crop sales totaled $270 million, and livestock and other animal product sales were $11 million.


By comparison Douglas County has about 67% of its land base in agriculture. The county has 618 farms employing 18% of its workforce.


Grant County was listed as 10th most productive on the new report. Yakima County came in at 13.


Washington ranks 16th in the nation, holding 2.3% of the total share of U.S. agricultural value, with an estimated $14 billion in products sold.


The report states that ingenuity is helping sustain agricultural economies including agricultural research, technological innovation, improved crop and livestock genetics, and updated farm management practices.
