Repairs to wildfire scarred landscape prioritized ahead of winter weather
As wildfire season draws down, attention is now focused on repairing the landscape and mitigating against and protecting land from the adverse effects of fall and winter weather.
"We really need to make sure that the U.S. Forest Service and others are putting resources into the post-fire mitigation," Chelan County Commissioner Brad Hawkins told KOZI on Monday. "Planting a reasonable amount of trees, clearing out the dead and downed trees so they don't start future fires. This would require massive additional investments."
The impacts from rain bringing debris and mud flows, to the potential of winter flooding, along with future wildfire preventions is what Chelan County Commissioner Brad Hawkins is hoping for from a letter he and his colleagues sent to the Washington Congressional delegation requesting additional federal investment.
"We simply can not live with wildfires every season," proclaimed Hawkins. "It's not good for our residents, their finances, the overall county economy, our tourism economy, and also the health impacts and social impacts fro0m wildfires. It's just been too much."
"We have a lot of work to catch up on, we have a lot of fuel out there, overgrown, in the U.S. Forest Service lands and we need to clear those out" Hawkins added. "We need to have strategic thinning and have sawmilling. That is something that could put people to work. It could help our economy and help of forest lands."
