Summer fire restrictions caused the annual flag retirement ceremony performed by members of Manson American Legion Post 108 to be held Monday.

The service club says its a dignified way to dispose of unserviceable flags.

Post Service Officer Norm Manly says the ceremony included the Pledge of Allegiance and prayers before the flags are respectfully burned to ashes. He added that it serves as a tribute to the flag’s symbolism and to the service it represents.

“With 450 worn flags stored in our unit, it was time to hold a retirement ceremony,” explained Vice Commodore Brian Strausbaugh. “Thanks to the Chelan VFW, the American Legion was able to conduct the ceremony on November 24 at noon.”

Post 108’s Chaplain, Marie Cannon offered ta prayer for the proper respect for the flags

At noon, Legion member Bob Hoots placed the first flag into the fire, beginning the solemn retirement ceremony. Hours later, Strausbaugh placed the final flag, number 450 into the flames, completing the tribute.
