There’s light at the end of the tunnel, and inside it too!
The Knapps Hill Tunnel on U.S. Highway 97-A reopened to traffic Monday afternoon, following a 15-day closure to allow Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) crews to install new wiring, conduit and new lights inside the entire length of the tunnel.
"Large conduit structures run wire throughout the tunnel as well as 160 laminar heads in there," said project Chief Inspector Jacob Cunnington. "Crews also updated the controlling system which will allow the lights to adapt to time of day and ambient light."
Cunnington estimated the cost of the lighting upgrade at about $680,000.
WSDOT says the new lighting system intends make travel through the tunnel safer.
