A grass and brush wildfire near Winthrop has consumed an estimated 82.7 acres as of Sunday night. The fire, north of highway 20, along the 1213 road has caused a “get ready” evacuation notice to be posted for an area west of Winthrop and in the location of Hamilton Ranch Road.
Fire crews are working to secure fire protection lines around the perimeter of the fire and dousing hot spots.
Two fires, burning a total of about four acres sparked Sunday along Highway 28 in Douglas County. The largest west of Rock Island, near Malaga.
An estimated 119 acres of grass and brush burned along Highway 97A and Navarre Coulee Road Saturday afternoon.

"It was running pretty hard when I first got here, we had houses within a mile of the left flank of the fire," said Entiat Fire Chief Adam Jones. "We ended up getting an air attack, three helicopters and some scoopers on it. We were in unified command with the DNR (Washington State Department of Natural Resources) and the Forest Service, and multiple other agencies that showed up."
The fire’s progression was stopped after about a six hour firefight.
"Even though there's a bit of a green grass component to it, it is quite dry," the chief shared in describing the ripe fire fuels that exist.
Chief Jones says no homes or other structures were damaged. A cause is under investigation.
