Fatal utility accident in Chelan prompts local and state investigation

A utility worker employed by a contractor on a Chelan PUD project died from injuries suffered in a fall from a power pole Tuesday while doing work on an electrical pole along South Lakeshore Road, about 16 miles north of Chelan.

The Chelan County Coroner identifies the victim as Ivan Garcia, 24, of Yakima. NCWLife reports that Garcia was working at the top of the power pole when the pole snapped, causing him to fall over 20 feet.

Chelan Fire and Rescue personnel transported Garcia to Lake Chelan Hospital, where he was declared dead.

"Our deepest sympathies go out to the crew members' family, friends and co-workers," Chelan PUD Communications Strategist Rachel Hansen shared on Wednesday. "Right now we're focused on learning everything we can about this incident. We're cooperating with local and state agencies on an investigation."

"Safety is one of our core values," state Hansen. "When our crews are out on a project there are many safety protocols that we follow that are specific to the job. Before we start any work there is a safety meeting with the crew members to go over those protocols."

"It's common for the PUD to contract with companies for extra support on big projects, when we need it," added Hansen.

The PUD website notes a fiber network project along South Lakeshore Road.
