Chelan Library project stalls due to spendy structural fix

A hiccup has occurred in completing repairs to the Chelan Library building. The city council had authorized an emergency expenditure of up to $150,000 for structural improvements before the library would proceed with interior renovations.

City Administrator Laura McAloon reported to the city council Tuesday night that a sole contractor’s request to complete the project was higher than anticipated.

"Unfortunately it came in $100,000 higher than the engineer's estimate," said McAloon. "A $100,000 difference is significant, so we are preparing an analysis of what's the next best action."

The city plans to discuss other available options with North Central Washington Libraries.

NCW Libraries paused a planned renovation of the historic library after workers discovered significant water damage affecting the foundation of the nearly 100-year-old building.

Once the structural improvements are completed, interior library improvements, part of NCW Libraries’ Reimagining Spaces Project, a districtwide investment totaling $10 million, will include upgraded shelving and furniture, new paint, partial flooring upgrades, new private reservable meeting spaces, and an improved service desk. The interior upgrades are expected to cost $591,609..
