Chelan and Douglas County grass fires offer a stark reminder of the ongoing summer threat of wildland fires

Spring Canyon Fire, near McNeil Canyon and Bigelow Springs Roads, June 28.

A reminder of this past summer’s wildfire experiences, the area along Stayman Flats Road, southwest of the Chelan Butte , that burned last week, was followed by a 15-20 acre fire north of McNeil Canyon Road, east of State Route 97, outside of Orondo on Saturday.

Douglas County Fire District 5 reported last night that the McNeil Canyon fire ignited multiple structures, including RVs, a carport and at least two vehicles.

Local firefighters on the ground, and water dumping aircraft stopped the fire from growing late Saturday night.

Chelan Fire and Rescue had Boat 71 on the lake for a time being Saturday to assist with the safety of recreational boaters while the scooper was on the lake.

Fire District 5 shared details of the fire and the mutual aid response from local firefighters:

At approximately 5:15p.m. on June 28, the Spring Canyon Fire was first reported near McNeil Canyon and Bigelow Springs Road after community members observed heavy smoke. Douglas County Fire District #5 responded to the scene, where the fire rapidly spread through dry grass and sagebrush, igniting multiple structures, including RVs, a carport, and at least two vehicles. A second alarm was requested as the fire intensified.

Level 1 evacuation notices were issued for homes along Spring Canyon Road as the fire advanced toward the Columbia River. Ground and air resources—including scooper aircraft and two helicopters—were deployed quickly to contain the blaze.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, though initial reports suggest it may have started due to mechanical work being conducted by residents in the area.

Thanks to outstanding interagency coordination, the fire was contained at approximately 20 acres. No firefighter or civilian injuries were reported.

We extend our sincere gratitude to all responding agencies for their dedication and professionalism:

To the community members who generously provided meals, snacks, and drinks for our emergency personnel, your kindness and support made a real difference.

While the fire is now fully contained, small areas of smoke may remain visible over the next few days as heavy, burned-out timber continues to smolder deep within the interior. All evacuation levels have been lifted, and there are currently no road closures in the area.
