Cesar Rivera-Vargas has been appointed to the Chelan City Council. He succeeds Mark Ericks who retired due to health concerns. Vargas' appointment came after the city council interviewed five candidates Tuesday night, and deliberated for more than an hour before making their selection.
Vargas previously served two terms as a Trustee for Carpenters Local 816, where he completed leadership training.
"I've worked in the orchards, in the service industry and helped build the hospital here," said Vargas during a public interview before the city council Tuesday night. "Through those experiences I've seen how much this community has changed, from the challenges facing agriculture to the shift in tourism and local business. These experiences have given me a deep appreciation for the people here and a strong commitment to protecting Chelan's future."
Vargas said he would serve to support local business, creating opportunities for working families, and helping assure that Chelan continues to grow in a responsible and sustainable way.
"I strongly believe in the values such as hard work, integrity, accountability, safety, fairness and teamwork," Vargas added.
Vargas will serve the 18 months remaining in Ericks' term.

I think his background in the orchards, service industry, and local construction projects gives him a valuable perspective on the needs of the community. His focus on supporting local businesses, creating opportunities for working families, and promoting sustainable growth sounds promising for Chelan's future. Reading about leaders who bring diverse experiences to public service reminds me of Basket Random, where different strengths and approaches can make a real difference in achieving success. I wish him the best as he begins serving the community in this new role.
