A Bridgeport woman has been arrested in the alleged stabbing of a clerk at the San Marcos Market on Columbia Ave. on Saturday.
A Douglas County Sheriff’s report says that the woman entered the market and confronted a worker at the store counter. Sheriff’s deputies report that the two got into a struggle, when the employee was stabbed multiple times in the face. The suspect then fled the scene on foot.
Deputies provided aid to the victim, who identified the suspect as Monica Mercado, 23, of Bridgeport. It was determined that the suspect and victim were known to each other and had been involved in an argument days earlier.
The victim was transported by ambulance to Three Rivers Hospital for treatment of injuries.
Mercado was not found at her Fairview Ave. home, but on Tuesday she surrendered to deputies at the Sheriff’s substation in Bridgeport. Mercado was charged with assault and malicious mischief.
