In a letter to the public on Saturday, Chelan County Sheriff Mike Morrison responded to citizen complaints about the homeless encampment north of Malaga-Alcoa highway near Hedges Road.

The property is owned by Chelan County and the Sheriff says the county commissioners will be given a suggested ordinance to review that would allow deputies to clear the site.

The Sheriff says “our plan includes collaborating with county Public Works staff to clean the property while working with Chelan County Coordinated Entry and the Behavioral Health Unit to connect displaced individuals with available resources.”

Sheriff Morrison wrote that his office will not accept the encampment as a norm within Chelan County.

In a related story published by NCW News, The city councils of Wenatchee and East Wenatchee met recently to discuss expanding efforts to help un-housed individuals. At a joint workshop council members heard that treatment options and stable housing is a solution.

Wenatchee Community Development Director Glen DeVries said the interlocal emphasis is to help those living without shelter get the resources they need.

Much of DeVries suggested low-barrier shelters for people with the highest needs, often locals experiencing mental health and substance abuse crises.
