How Lake Chelan Grows - citizen opinion invited at community open house

"How Lake Chelan Grows, envisioning our communities’ future," is the focus of a community land use plan open house beginning at 5:30 p.m. Monday at the Chelan High School Performing Arts Center.

The city of Chelan and Chelan County invite your opinion.

"Community core values become the foundation for comp plan planning," said Chelan Mayor Erin McCardle. "This meeting is really a quick overview and education for the community to understand what the comp plan process is going to look like. We have (city and county department) directors coming in to talk about each of the different elements of the comp plan and then there'll be some time for questions afterwards."

Revisions to the city and county land use planning documents are required by the state by next summer.

"We're going to kick off this conversation addressing why does Lake Chelan need to grow or have to grow," Mayor McCardle added. "We hear a lot, we just want to stay the way that we were or slow down growth or stop growth. Try to educate a little bit on how that is not really realistic. Also trying to paint a picture so people understand that if you are a community that isn't growing, here are the things that negatively impact a community."

The City of Chelan is proud to join communities across the country in celebrating

National Public Works Week, May 19-23, honoring the vital contributions of public works professionals who help keep our cities strong, safe, and thriving.

Held annually, National Public Works Week serves as a time to recognize the often behind-the-scenes work that makes daily life possible—from clean water and efficient sewers to safe streets and dependable sanitation services.

This year’s theme, “People, Purpose, Presence,” highlights three cornerstone ideals that motivate public works professionals to serve in their communities every day. Meeting the needs of people is what gives public works its sense of purpose. Many times, public works professionals will never meet those whose

lives have been impacted—because when things are going right, no one even notices public works is there. Yet, with or without fanfare, public works is ever present, working in the background to advance quality of life for all.

In Chelan, our we honor the Public Works Department and their commitment and professionalism with a series of staff appreciation activities culminating in a community “Touch a Truck” event on Friday, May 23, on Emerson Street. Local students from the Lake Chelan School District will get the chance to meet the people and equipment that power our city. The event is designed to educate, inspire, and celebrate the role of public works in everyday life for our youngest residents.

“Public Works Week is more than just a celebration—it’s a recognition of community service, purpose, and pride,” said Jake Youngren, Director of Public Works for the City of Chelan. “We’re excited to highlight the incredible work our teams do every single day to keep Chelan running smoothly.”
