In a momentous decision for the future of our community, Chelan voters have approved a .3% sales tax increase to fund the City’s Transportation Benefit District (TBD), by five votes, 1,169 to 1,164.
"It went from, our last count being down five, it is now a 'yes' and a five vote margin, 50.11% to 49.89%," said Chelan County Auditor Skip Moore, just after certifying the Nov. 5 general election.
In a news release, the city shared, "the sales tax increase will deliver transformational benefits for our transportation infrastructure."
"Revenue generated through this sales tax increase will be dedicated to projects that improve safety, enhance mobility, and reduce congestion," said city Communications director Chad Coltman. "The City of Chelan will hold all TBD revenues in a designated special fund to ensure transparency and accountability. Careful stewardship is part of the City of Chelan’s commitment to ensuring that every dollar makes a meaningful impact for residents and visitors alike."
The sales tax increase will go into effect on January 1, and is estimated to bring in $900,000 annually. Visitors to Chelan will contribute through their purchases.
Over the next year, the City will evaluate projects included in the Six-Year Transportation Improvement Program and conduct a comprehensive traffic study focusing on downtown congestion and Lakeside parking issues. The study will help identify solutions with the greatest potential to improve traffic flow; benefiting drivers and pedestrians.
Additionally, the City will refine cost estimates for a proposed two-way Woodin Ave. bridge re-alignment and alternative options as requested by the Chelan City Council.
"The approval of this sales tax increase signals Chelan’s commitment to
a safer, more efficient, and connected transportation future," the city news release stated.
