Breathing a sigh of relief as election day draws near? Chelan County Auditor Skip Moore, the county’s top elections official, says ballots continue to trickle in ahead of the Tuesday night deadline. Moore says he wouldn’t be surprised if as many as 9 out of 10 of Chelan County registered voters cast ballots this year.
"We're going to be processing ballots through election day to get as many ballots as possible into the results on Tuesday night," said Moore. "Tuesday is usually a busy day handling people at the counter. I can almost be assured, there will be one and two people at the counter until 8 o'clock at night."
There is heightened security with the confidential ballot that you submitted. With the recent vandalism done to drop off boxes in Vancouver and Portland, Moore says local elections staff has re-checked what he described as 'suppression devices' on the county ballot boxes.
"Whenever we're handling ballots we have at least two people involved," said Moore. "They're confirming that the seals that were last placed on the drop box are the ones that were originally placed there so we know that nobody has been in the box. Those ballots are placed in a transport bag which is sealed. A receipt is placed inside of it; seal number , so we know no tampering has occurred."
"Once they get to the courthouse, our processing center is in a sealed area, all glass with a key card entry," Moore confirmed. "All the ballots are locked in cages that we have and those are sealed as well."
At last count, 51% of Chelan County voters have returned their ballots. Moore says that number was 86% at this time in the 2020 General election.
Ballot boxes are available at city halls in Chelan, Entiat, Cashmere and Leavenworth, at libraries in Manson and Wenatchee and at the Chelan County Courthouse.
