A first in the world fusion power plant envisioned at Malaga

Everett-based Helion Energy, a fusion power generating company, may build the world’s first-ever fusion power plant at Malaga. The company has hopes of providing the necessary power to the nearby Microsoft datacenter.

Helion’s interest in Chelan County was announced at a press conference Thursday at the Confluence Technology Center in Wenatchee.

Helion has a vision of building a 50-megawatt fusion power plant on Chelan PUD-owned land, near Rock Island Dam. The permitting process to site and construct the proposed fusion facility has not yet begun. Helion reports their plan is to begin ground breaking later this year and begin generating fusion power in 2028.

At the company's generator production facility in Everett, Ryan Song, a Helion Production Manager told the Puget Sound Business Journal, “It’s awesome walking in the door every single day, thinking about being fulfilled in my work, making an impact on the world, to look at the machine and step back, and just be in awe — it’s like a work of art.”

The company plans on hiring over 100 construction workers at the proposed Malaga facility, and once it’s built, at least 30 employees for daily operations.

Citizens interested in learning more about Helion and fusion power are invited to a community event beginning at 5:30 p.m., March 11 at Mission View Elementary School in Wenatchee.
