MURDER SUSPECT MAY UNDERGO MENTAL EVALUATION

A mental health evaluation may be ordered for the man accused of shooting his former girlfriend to death on Badger Mountain in Douglas county last month, this as 27 year old Dalton Scott Potter refuses to communicate with his defense attorny. Potter has refused to answer questions in two court appearances, and his public defender Jesse Collins says his client is not assisting him in preparing his defense case, making it virtually impossible for him to assist Potter. In an affidavit filed Wednesday in Douglas County Superior Court, Collins asked in a motion for an expert from Eastern State Hospital for an evaluation of Potter. Potter allegedly gunned down 37 year old Alyssa Longwell on a rural Douglas County Highway and then turned and fired on bystanders who witnessed the event. Potter remains incarcerated in the Chelan County Jail, due to be arraigned this week on 13 felony charges in Longwell's killing, including first-degree murder. Witnesses say they saw Longwell tumble out of a Kia Soul traveling on Badger Mountain Road nine miles south of Waterville, when they saw Potter exit the vehicle and fire multiple shots from a handgun, striking Longwell as she lay on the roadside. He then turned and fired on the father and daughter who were driving a pickup truck. Police say the Kia driven by Potter was registered to Longwell, as was the handgun he allegedly used in her murder on January 21st. Potter was arrested at a nearby home after Douglas County Deputies and officers from several surrounding law enforcement agencies stormed the area. Judge Brian Huber will make the final decision on the mental health evalution.
