Wenatchee and East Wenatchee police have announced plans to enhance safety along the Apple Capital Recreation Loop Trail this summer. The East Wenatchee City Council approved a contract between Chelan County PUD, Wenatchee Police Department, and East Wenatchee Police Department for joint weekend patrols. The trail, managed by the PUD through a lease, spans from Walla Walla Point Park to Wenatchee Riverfront Park. East Wenatchee Assistant Police Chief Erik Hampton emphasized the Loop Trail's significance and past incidents of arson and graffiti. Officers have already been patrolling the trail at night, resulting in successful graffiti-related arrests.
Under the contract, the PUD will reimburse the city at a rate of $96.55 per hour for officers' work, totaling $50,000. $20,000 will be allocated for equipment purchasing, including two e-bikes for each city and accompanying uniforms. The remaining $30,000 will cover overtime reimbursement for officers involved in Loop Trail patrols. The contract is set to conclude on September 30.
In support of the initiative, East Wenatchee declared May as National Bike Month, followed by Wenatchee. These efforts aim to promote biking and enhance safety along the Loop Trail for all residents and visitors.
