At last Thursday's community meeting at the Chelan Fire & Rescue Station, Chelan County Jail Director Chris Sharp gave an accounting at improvements made at the facility; he started by reminding those in attendance that the jail is more than 35 years old:
One of the programs Sharp has instituted has gotten nationwide attention: the Drug Interdiction Program, which has reduced the proliferation of drug use in the jail, which was a big problem a couple of years ago:
With the success of the program, Sharp was invited to speak about it to two national corrections conferences last year, one in Huntsville, Alabama, the other in Plainfield, Indiana. Sharp said he's received phone calls from other jails asking about the program ever since.
