HAWKINS ON SCHOOL YEAR BILL

12th District State Senator Brad Hawkins says the school calendar is outdated and needs rethinking. He's sponsoring a bill that would add five days to the school year, for a total of 185 days a year. In Hawkins' view, it's an idea that's way overdue:





Hawkins says the COVID pandemic has led to a lot of learning loss, with some students at least two years behind in their education:





Hawkins' bill, Senate Bill 5505, is currently in the State Senate Committee on Early Learning and K thru 12 Education. It faces a February 17th cutoff date to make it out of committee.
