Chelan seeks Commerce grant for strategic economic plan

Envisioning a diversified economy in Chelan is the effort that will be placed in a new strategic plan, paid in part by a Washington State Department of Commerce program. The city council decided to apply for a $75,000 grant to determine what, if any, new economic opportunities exist in the city.
"A diverse economy reduces the city's reliance on agriculture and tourism, both volatile industries, by increasing additional opportunities for employment" said Chelan City Administrator Laura McAloon.
McAloon told the city council on Tuesday that a strategic plan, "Would identify the city's economic strengths, our weaknesses, and opportunities for growth."
The state Community Economic Revitalization Board grant, if received, would augment the $60,000 already budgeted by the city council for an economic study.
"I think it will be the first that we've ever significantly invested in developing an economic development strategy for the city of Chelan," said Chelan Mayor Erin McCardle. "We've relied on tourism and agriculture, but we've never really had an active, thought out, economic strategy."
