[3/22/22] January Employment Numbers
The unemployment rate for Chelan and Douglas counties jumped in January to 6-point-6 percent, that’s up from December’s 4-point-5 percent, but down from the 7-point-8 percent number in January of 2021. January’s jobless number is the highest since last March. Regional Labor Economist Don Meseck prefers to compare year over year numbers, and he says when you look at this past January’s number with January of 2021, there’s good news:
But Meseck says the industry that has been leading the way in employment over the last year continues to lead the list:
What’s more, the labor force is starting to come back, too – it now numbers more than 64-thousand people, up more than two thousand from last January. Meseck says the Wenatchee Metropolitan Statistical Area – which takes in all of Chelan and Douglas Counties – is doing better than other counties in Eastern Washington, with the labor force now back to pre-COVID levels.
