Chelan FFA Update 3/12/2014

The Washington State FFA Association evaluated all the State FFA Degree applications and Proficiency Award applications over the weekend and Chelan FFA members did very well.

German Gutierrez, Romaine Doty, Jake Straub, Ryan Gerber, Javier Rivera, Apolinar Blanco, Loren Stocker, and Jesus Rodriguez all met the standards for receiving the State FFA Degree. This is highest degree that the Washington State FFA Association can bestow on its members. To qualify members have to complete a minimum of 360 hours of Agriculture Education instruction, be a member in good standing for 24 months, have received the Greenhand FFA Degree and the Chapter FFA Degree, participate in 5 activities above the Chapter Level, completed 25 hours of community service, and earned or productively invested a minimum of $1000 from their Supervised Agriculture Experience project. Apolinar Blanco was selected at the District VII Star in Placement and also selected as a finalist for the State Star in Placement. He will be recognized for this honor in Stars Over Washington Pageant on Saturday May 17th at the 4th General Session of the 84th Annual Washington State FFA Convention on campus of Washington State University in Pullman, Washington.

Three members also were selected as the State Proficiency Award winners. Jesus Rodriguez was the state winner in Placement in Tree Fruit Production for his 4 years of work in the local tree fruit industry. Jesus has worked all aspects of the local tree fruit industry. His application will now be sent on for national consideration. He plans to enter a career in the tree fruit industry as fieldman after completing college at Wenatchee Valley Community College and Washington State University.

Apolinar Blanco had the winning application in Placement in Agricultural Processing. His Supervised Agriculture Education project has involved 2 summers working on the cherry processing line for Chelan Fruit and a year of work in produce and meat department at Chelan Red Apple Market. His application will also be sent on for National consideration. He plans on attending Walla Walla Community College and then Washington State University or University of Idaho to pursue a career as a secondary Agriculture Education Teacher and FFA Advisor. Apol was also selected by the District VII Agriculture Educators as the District VII Outstanding Senior Member and was selected to receive the District VII $500 Scholarship.

Dane Schwartz was the state winner in the Placement in Agriculture Sales Proficiency Award. His SAE involves working at Dave's Apple Barrel Bark where he is involved in sales, customer service, and landscape material stocking. He is just a sophomore and his application will be held because you can only be considered once at the national level.

4 members are in the process of completing their American FFA Degree applications and the Chapter officers are completing the National Chapter Application which are all due on April 1st.
