With continued snowmelt and forecasts for high temperatures this weekend to reach 100 degrees or above, spill gates at the Lake Chelan Dam have been opened, sending flows of about 1,500 cubic feet per second into the Chelan River Gorge.
The public is urged to use extreme caution along the river shore above the gorge, and to stay out of the steep-walled Chelan Gorge.
Releasing additional water into the gorge is necessary to prepare for the increased runoff into the lake expected to happen with the coming heat wave. Spill will be managed, in general, to increase Lake Chelan elevation gradually as snowmelt continues, and lakeshore residents and visitors won’t see a significant change due to this operation.
The amount of water the PUD spills into the Chelan River Gorge may increase or decrease, depending on snowmelt and temperatures.
Information about the level of Lake Chelan is updated frequently on Chelan PUD’s website at www.chelanpud.org
