High Bids Slow Down Library Project 4/1/2013
City of Chelan officials say they will likely now turn their attention to scraping together more funding in order to accept the low bid that was opened more than a week ago- which was nearly $100 thousand higher than the city had predicted.
According to City Administrator, Paul Schmidt, the new funding approach will push the library finishing date from late summer, to mid-fall- after the bid acceptance had to be removed from last week’s agenda to give city officials the opportunity to look at their options.
The asbestos portion plays a large role in the overall higher than expected bids, and Schmidt says asking for seller participation to cover removal costs is still an option the city will be considering.
Asbestos is a material widely used in building products up until the 1980’s- when the hazards of exposure became apparent.
Asbestos is extremely hazardous to workers handling it and to others in the area when it gets into the air and is inhaled. It is a carcinogen that causes lung cancer- and laws were enacted to prevent exposure. One part of the laws includes the requirement for building owners to inspect their buildings before construction, renovation and demolition activities.
