For the first time in history- US grown pears have officially gained access to the Chinese Market- a feat that has been in the works for about two decades.
Kevin Moffitt, President and CEO of the Pear Bureau Northwest, says they were able to crack the China market after overcoming some obstacles that China was concerned with, of which is the tree disease “Fire Blight”.
Moffitt adds that the breakthrough into the China market will have a considerable impact on local growers.
The export deal will include Pears from Washington, Oregon and California.
Pear Bureau Northwest is a non-profit marketing organization that was established in 1931 to promote the fresh USA Pears grown in Washington and Oregon- which produces 84% of the US fresh pear crop.
