Manson Fire District 5 received word that they will be awarded a smoke alarm grant that will purchase smoke detectors for firefighters to install in more than 150 homes throughout the community this spring.
The crusade is part of a grant through the Washington State Fire Marshal’s Office and is part of a Federal Initiative as part of their Preventive and Safety Program.
Manson Chief Arnold Baker, tells KOZI that they were one of five departments statewide to participate in the grant program- and by far the smallest.
Nearly two thirds of home fire deaths are a result of fires in homes without a working smoke alarm- that’s a number the State Fire Marshal’s Office hopes to improve with Free Smoke Alarm Installation Programs like the one in Manson.
Manson Fire District 5 will begin contacting target residents next month before offering the program community wide.
