One town’s loss is another’s gain. Or, such is the case for the Winthrop’s Town Marshall’s Office, who will fill a position that has been vacant since summer with an officer who is being cut from the Twisp Police Department because of budget restraints.
Twisp was receiving funds from a Department of Justice grant that paid the salary of a full time officer, and is set to expire at the end of this month, forcing the town to lay off Officer Mike Hartnett.
Winthrop Mayor, Dave Acheson, says the Winthrop Marshall’s Office typically consists of a chief, who serves as the town Marshall, and two officers- however the town has been struggling for months to fill both officer positions.
Acheson adds that there are great benefits to hiring law enforcement laterally, including saving the town a substantial amount of money.
The Town of Winthrop is home to about 400 residents.
