Frustrated with the lack of enforcement on illegal vacation rentals, a group of homeowners from a northshore housing development brought their complaints to the Chelan City Council last week.
City Administrator, Jim Reinbold, says this is not the first time they’ve heard from community members on this subject.
Chelan Mayor, Bob Goedde, says he feels the issue is less about renting and more about the renters.
The Chelan Municipal Code states a minimum 30-day rental is required for homes in areas zoned residential. Overnight or weekly rentals are confined to Tourist Accommodation Zones or commonly called TA… however enforcement is lacking to the point of near non-existent.
The code enforcement position at the city has been vacant for nearly a year but was recently filled with a new hire from Wenatchee.
City officials say they plan revisit the issue during the winter months, and hope to have a solution in place before next year’s summer tourist season.
