A new plan between American Whitewater and Chelan PUD will reduce weekend water releases into the Chelan River Gorge for whitewater boating to one weekend a year from the four weekends originally agreed on in the dam’s 50-year license.
The new schedule will start this year on September 15 and 16.
Kris Pomianek (POMENAK), Recreation Resource Advisor for Chelan PUD, told KOZI that for the past three years, the PUD has been monitoring studies that looked at several aspects of white water boating events through the gorge.
Boaters have until Friday, September 14 to register for the event, but Pomianek admits that the ride through the gorge is not for beginning kayakers.
Flows in the gorge rise up to 400 cubic feet per second for the Whitewater boating event, up from the current flow of 140 cubic feet per second."CLICK HERE" for Audio
