The Winthrop Town Council is faced with a use it or lose it situation and was hoping to secure a contractor to complete a portion of the SusieStephensTrail, but was forced to reject the sole bid that exceeded the available funds.
The town was awarded a $1.4 million grant to complete a 1.3 mile pedestrian and bike trail and a 400-foot cable bridge across the river, which was completed last year.
The town planned to pave a section of the trail with their remaining funds.
Town Clerk, Michelle Gaines, told us that the council will now go back to the drawing board.
The Town of Winthrop has also applied for additional grants in order to complete the project, and expects to hear word on that funding sometime this summer.
