North Cascades Highway 20 Opens Today 5/10/2012
The North Cascades Highway 20 between Newhalem and Mazama will open today, after the annual winter closure- just in time for the 67th celebration of ‘49er Days in Winthrop this weekend.
The North Cascades Highway, or State Route 20, is the northernmost route across the Cascade Mountain Range in Washington. A 37-mile section of the highway closes each winter, usually in mid to late November, until spring, usually mid April to early May because of avalanche danger.
Every year, the opening day varies depending on snow pack levels and avalanche activities, with the latest ever opening on June 14, 1974.
Jeff Adamson, with the Department of Transportation, tells KOZI that he is always eager to announce the opening of the North Cascades Highway.
And for travelers who get there early enough, part of the excitement of opening day is Tootsie Clark, and her now famous cinnamon rolls- but this year- Adamson says those making the journey either way are in for a treat.
If you enjoy breathtaking views and nice drives- The North Cascades Highway is a must drive route. And, you still have time to take part in the age-old tradition of cinnamon rolls or even help kick off the new tradition of handmade candy. And it opens for the season today at noon.
