Students in the BrewsterSchool District will soon be strapping on helmets and pedaling their way through class on 30 new Trek bicycles thanks to a $25 thousand grant secured through the Safe Schools Program.
The school bike and pedestrian safety education program is tailored to improve safety and encourage more children, including children with disabilities, to safely walk and bicycle to school.
Superintendent, Eric Driessen, told KOZI news that the school was awarded the grant last fall and has been awaiting the arrival of the equipment.
Each year nearly 800 bicyclists are killed and more than one third occur among youth ages five to 20. Nationally, bicyclist’s ages 14 and under are at five times greater risk for injury than older cyclists.
Included in the grant funding, along with bicycles and helmets, was a trailer and the curriculum necessary to effectively teach bicycle safety."CLICK HERE" for Audio
