Suicide Prevention Group In Chelan County 4/4/2012
A new group calling themselves the Suicide Prevention Coalition of North Central Washington met for the first time last week at WenatcheeHigh School.
Suicide has been a hot topic lately, and the medical and mental health professional community in the valley is taking note- which prompted the formation of the coalition.
Dr. Tera Rae, a Physiologist at Columbia Valley Community Health, and one of the founders of the new Suicide Coalition of North Central Washington (SCNCW), says the idea of forming the group started when several co-workers started talking about the recent suicides in ChelanCounty, became concerned and started asking questions.
In WashingtonState, the suicide rate among youth is about 10% higher than the national average.  Suicide is the second leading cause of death among young adults in Washington; the leading cause being motor vehicle accidents.
Dr. Rae adds that in the past few months, those numbers jumped to alarming numbers.
The group is looking for volunteers with a wide variety of skills to help with tasks such as setting up a website and Facebook page, and helping spread the word.
Anyone who would like to contact the coalition can call 881-8122 for a non-emergency call.
