NCRL Sued For Not Allowing Porn 2/10/2012
After a recent public outcry over a Seattle public library’s refusal to block pornographic material from public computers, the 2006 lawsuit against North Central Regional Libraries District is being brought back to light.
The ongoing lawsuit brought on by the American Civil Liberties Union, was filed because our local libraries have placed filters on public computers that will not allow obscenities to be viewed.
The American Civil Liberties Union is asking for the library system to allow adults who request it free access to the internet, with no questions asked. North Central Regional Library is based out of Wenatchee, but has branches throughout Okanogan, Grant, Ferry, Douglas and ChelanCounties.
Dan Howard, Director of Public Services with North Central Regional Library District, says the filters are in place because allowing pornographic material does not coincide with their mission.
Howard says a law was passed in early 2000 that supports the library’s stance on the issue.
Tune in next week when we visit with Doug Honig, Communications Director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Washington to get more details on the lawsuit against North Central Regional Library District and what prompted the action.
