Fearing the possibility of Wenatchee going bankrupt and leaving a “black eye” on the region, Senator Linda Evans Parlette added an emergency clause to Senate Bill 5984- allowing Wenatchee to impose a .02% tax without a public vote.
Senator Parlette says the bill is a complex issue, but after leaders of the nine local governments that make up the Greater Wenatchee Regional Events Center Public Facilities District rejected a regional .02% tax increase, they met and requested some changes to the bill.
The additions to the bill will allow Wenatchee to approve a tax increase without being voted on by the public, a move that Senator Parlette admits is very controversial.
In order for the tax measure to be put on the ballot, it must be approved and submitted by the first week of March.
