Interact is Rotary International's service club for young people ages 12 to 18 and one of the most significant and fastest-growing Rotary service programs, with more than 10,700 clubs in 109 countries and geographical areas. Interact has become a worldwide phenomenon with almost 240,000 young people involved. Many members of Chelan Rotary have been hard at work over the last year and a half to create and obtain the official chartering of the Chelan High School Interact Club by Rotary International which came to fruition this month.
Each year the Chelan High School Interact club is responsible for completing at least two community service projects and one project that furthers international understanding and goodwill. Through these efforts, Chelan High School Interact will develop a network of friendships with local and overseas clubs and learn the importance of: developing leadership skills and personal integrity, demonstrating helpfulness and respect for others, and understanding the value of individual responsibility and hard work.
At the Chelan High School Homecoming football game, the Interact club held their first official fundraising activity. This activity, in support of ShelterBox, involved erecting a ShelterBox at the game and soliciting pledges from spectators to have Assistant Principal, Scott Raab live in the ShelterBox one minute for every dollar pledged. The Interact club has also helped Rotary build bleachers at the new soccer fields and done concessions for a volleyball game as a fundraiser.
The Interact Club is not without help. Within Chelan Rotary we have Concie Luna as the 2011-2012 New Generations Chairperson and Interact Advisor and at the High School, Assistant Principal (and Rotarian) Scott Raab and Spanish Teacher, Brisa Romero will act as advisors.
“This is a great club, and we’re very excited to see what else this club has to offer to us, and the good we can do through it.” Emma Palumbo, Interact Club Director.
