Fire crews from around our region have been battling a brush fire overnight in south Chelan. The fire was initially reported about 12:30 AM in the vicinity of the PUD Parking lot for the new Chelan River Gorge Trail.
The brush fire was reported burning in light fuel with occasional light to heavy timber. Aided by a steady 10-15 mph North/Northeast wind the fire quickly grew to a 3 alarm status.
Fire fighter from Chelan Fire and Rescue District 7 were joined by Manson Fire Fighters District 5, Okanogan-Douglas County 15 and Chelan County District 1. Approximately 60 firefighters have been battling the stubborn fire which has grown to approximately 50 acres in the south/southwest direction.
Firefighters have had some success in setting containment lines around portions of the fire but officials have not declared the fire contained. Base Fire command has been set neat Iowa Street in South Chelan.
At 5:30 AM this morning fire crews were beginning to rotate out, being replaced by fresh crews to battle the fire. Officials are (were) awaiting daylight to get a better look at progress to determine if additional resources are needed.
The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time and no injuries have been reported nor were any structures lost.
