A registered sex offender was arrested Sunday afternoon for a brutal attack on a woman at her Bridgeport home last month.
The 36-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of first-degree rape and burglary at a residence on Navarre Coulee Road by Douglas County sheriff’s deputies.
Douglas County Sheriff Harvey Gjesdal said the man is suspected of breaking into the woman’s home on June 3. The 58-year-old woman told investigators that she woke up around 1 a.m. to find the man standing next to her bed. She said the man forcibly raped her repeatedly over several hours and stopped occasionally to take drugs,
The woman did not report the incident to police right away, but did so on June 4 at the urging of a family member. She was then treated for injuries “consistent with the attack she described,” according to a law enforcement report.
According to court records, the man was previously arrested in 1996 for raping a woman he did not know as she walked to her Cashmere home. The woman was struck in the head, dragged behind a home and raped. She was also struck several times with a wooden board. The man pleaded guilty to first-degree rape in that incident and was sentenced to more than 11 years in prison.
