The Banks Lake Reservoir is set for a dramatic drawdown for the first time since 1993. A thirty-foot drawdown of the lake is part of scheduled maintenance on area dams, including the Dry Falls and North dams.
The Bureau of Reclamation plans to lower the lake to a target elevation of 1540 feet by the end of October. Starting in August, several boat launches will be closed with only Coulee Playland remaining open by August 16th.
The Ephrata Field Office will host an open house today from 4:30 to 6:30 to explain the process and access restrictions in detail to the public.
Refill of Banks Lake will begin early spring, 2012 with the lake returning to normal levels by April. No other Grand Coulee Dam lakes will be affected by the maintenance.
Visitors to Banks Lake will be treated with the special opportunity to see and walk on the bottom of the lake. Keep the dial tuned to KOZI in the coming days as we continue to follow this rare drawdown.
