Small Change Can Cause Havoc 6/10/2011
An eighth of an inch may not seem like much, but when you’re talking about a finely tuned, highly technical, 25,000 ton piece of equipment, it can cause havoc. Chelan County PUD Commissioner Dennis Bolz says in the 78 years since the first powerhouse was placed at Rock Island Dam, minuscule changes underneath the structure have put the turbines just a bit out of line. According to Bolz, the answer to the problem was a lot closer than previously thought. By using their own workers the PUD figures it saved about 1 million dollars a unit for repairs.

The report the workers presented to the board Monday was titled: “Progress Update and Cool Stuff We Get To Do At Work”.
