Bronze Metal Awarded 4/22/2011
U.S. Army Sgt. Nick Haglund, a 2001 graduate of Eastmont High School, was awarded the Bronze Star medal March 8. He was recommended for the medal by John Campbell, a major general in the U.S. Army. The certificate that accompanied the medal states that it was awarded for “exceptionally meritorious service in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, Afghanistan, from June 2010 to March 2011.

It also states, “Sgt. Haglund’s personal courage and commitment to mission accomplishment in a combat zone, under the most extreme of circumstances, greatly contributed to the success of Operation Enduring Freedom.” At the time, he was serving as a signals intelligence terminal guidance team leader with the 101st Airborne Division, Haglund said in an email. Currently, he is serving with the 743rd Military Intelligence Battalion out of Buckley Air Force Base, Denver. Haglund joined the Army in 2004 Haglund’s parents are Jim Haglund of East Wenatchee and Trudy Mills of Mukilteo.

Recipients of the medal must be recommended by the soldier’s commanding general, then approved by the Secretary of the Army.
