Amendment Heads To House For Approval 4/11/2011
Washington State Senators unanimously approved a constitutional amendment Friday that would limit the debt connected to the state's construction budget. The measure is co-sponsored by Senators Linda Evans Parlette and Democrat Derek Kilmer of Gig Harbor.

Under the Debt Reduction Act, Washington’s debt limit would be reduced over time from the present 9 percent of general state revenues to 7 percent, in half-percent increments starting in 2016. Both senators say the impetus is to stabilize the state’s debt situation so the economy can move forward:

The amendment now heads to the House, where it needs at least two-thirds approval. Because the measure would amend the constitution, a simple majority approval by the voters would also be needed.
