Chelan Co PUD Considers Capping Fiber Costs 3/22/2011
Chelan County PUD is considering capping its costs for connecting electric customers to the District’s Fiber optic network. The proposed policy change would limit the PUD’s cost for extending fiber to an individual home or business to 15-hundred dollars. Anything over that amount would be paid for by the customer’s retail internet service provider. PUD General Manager, John Janney (JANE-nee) says policy changes are needed to control costs. The PUD is losing about 8 million dollars a year on the program and Janney says the system cannot sustain itself under the current policy: "CLICK HERE" for Audio

The PUD is currently using a 25 million dollar grant to extend fiber to 98 percent of the district’s electric customers. The policy change would only impact those residents or businesses not included in the grant funded project.
Commissioners are scheduled to take final action on the new policy at their meeting next Monday.
