Dangerous Parking Near Pateros School 2/4/2011
The Pateros City Council and School Board recently held a joint meeting to discuss potentially dangerous parking problems near the school. According to Mayor Gail Howe, the council adopted an ordinance in 2008 prohibiting parking on the south side of Beach Street near the school. However, the issue came to a head with excessive traffic congestion during a recent basketball game. Fire Chief Mike Lambert says, the options are limited: education or enforcement.

Okanogan County Sheriff Gene Davis also weighed in on the discussion. He said illegal, even dangerous parking, is a problem seen at schools throughout the area, not just Pateros. He reluctantly thinks that enforcement may be the answer:"CLICK HERE" for Audio
As an alternative, the council and school board discussed a wide range of options, including car pooling, transportation provided from the downtown parking mall, parking at the Church of Christ and using the lot at the Boat Launch during good weather. In the interim, the decision was made to work to educate fans and students about the laws in hopes of reducing or even eliminating the problem.
