Chelan County Commissioners were shocked to learn recently that former Sheriff Mike Harum left office without reporting a 291-thousand dollar hole in his budget. Commissioner Keith Goehner claims the former Sheriff failed to clarify the accounting discrepancies in his monthly budget reports to the Commissioners, and that the end result is, the County will now have to dip into its budget reserves to make up the difference.
According to Goehner, the budget will now have to be adjusted and all of the County’s departments will feel the pinch, not just newly elected Sheriff Brian Burnett as the commissioners felt it was unfair to punish the incoming Sheriff.
The topic of the budget discrepancies will most likely be discussed at the next Chelan County Commissioners meeting, next Monday. As you may remember, Brian Burnett defeated Mike Harum in this past fall’s election and is in the process of organizing his new staff.
