PUD tackles power outages

7/29/2010

Numerous scattered outages were reported across Chelan County during last night’s thunderstorms.

Kimberlee Craig with the PUD said the pattern of those outages followed the path of the storm.

The first reports came in at about 6 p.m. in the Wenatchee area. From there, Craig said the outages moved northeast over Sunnyslope, then passed through Entiat and into Lake Chelan.

Many customers reported very brief outages where the power blinked off and then back on.

Craig said that’s by design – those flickering outages happened because the system was interrupting the power supply to check for problems.

Lightning damage to some transformers caused longer outages in the south county. Craig said power was out for several hours in Cashmere while the PUD waited for the right equipment to make repairs.

Since the outages were so scattered, Craig said it’s hard to pinpoint exactly how many homes were affected throughout the county.

The last crew was sent home at 5 a.m. today.

To get the latest power outage details during any storm, call the PUD’s 24-hour information line, 877-783-8123, or follow them on Twitter.

The PUD is also reminding everyone to use caution when lightning is in the area. There were no reported injuries last night, but if you see a downed power line, stay in your house or car and dial 911.
